Jung said "In each of us there is another whom we do not know. He speaks to us in dreams and tells us how differently he sees us from the way we see ourselves." A dream offers correction when we are off-center and suggests action we might take and the likely outcome of that action, all of which threatens our conscious ego that would like to believe that it already knows itself.
A dream is like an all-seeing x-ray. But it reads in pictures like hieroglyphs or a poem. We have to stay close to each image and observe its details, while tolerating the anxiety of not knowing what it means. Otherwise we impose our own prejudice upon the image, not giving it time to speak.
An interpretation succeeds when the class as a whole is convinced, when together we experience a deepening of consciousness. You can expect to enjoy this class and to participate actively. By working on dreams you will practice symbolic thinking, which is central to Jung’s understanding of maturation. This class is suitable for clinicians and for laypeople, for newcomers, and for those who have already taken the previous classes on dreams.
Please bring dreams from friends or family members (with their permission). This class is not therapy and we will not work with the participants’ dreams.
How do I participate?
Classes begin promptly: please enter before the hour. Click here for complete instructions for entering class. On the first session of each of the two classes the classroom will open 20 minutes early for people who may need to test or adjust their connection.
Please refer to the readings and read as much as you can before the first class.
Please email a dream, to the instructor, from a consenting friend or relative. If possible ask the dreamer for his or her associations to the main images and note these down.
This is exclusively a class, not therapy. We will not use participants' own dreams.
